Hi everybody, my name is Stefano Zacchiroli and I've become an enthusiast of (the possibility of) federated services via the Free Software movement. As a volunteer, I'm heavily involved in the Debian Project (who is making the Debian GNU/Linux distribution), currently holding the position of project leader. As my day job, I'm a researcher in Paris, France at IRILL (http://www.irill.org), which is a cross-institution computer science research center studying topics emerging from the Free Software ecosystem. I hold a Ph.D. in theoretical computer science and formal methods and I'm a computer geek by nature. I've been participating in other W3C activities, most notably as a member of the XML Schema working group, due to my (past) interest in streaming validation of complex document constraints known as "co-constraints". My interest in federated services stems from the observation that they are the natural evolution of the Free Software battled for user freedoms in an era which is more and more dominated by software. As Free Software is the only way to liberate users of personal computer applications, federations (of Free Software based services) are the only weapon to liberate users of applications "in the cloud". On the Debian front I'm keeping relationships with the FreedomBox foundation (http://freedomboxfoundation.org/) which is an obvious user, potentially very relevant, of the topics this group will be working on.
