Auto-rotating images in the browser is controversial for reasons that mostly boil down to web compat, not code footprint. WebKit-on-iOS does it and AFAIK few others do. https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19688 is about doing this in WebKit and you're welcome to read that bug to get a feel for the various viewpoints.
