It's not like H.264 won't be successful if another baseline format is specified in the recommendation. So, all this PR about submarine patents to scare people away from unencumbered formats is not necessary. Recommending an unencumbered format like MPEG 1 or H.263 or Dirac or Theora (the last one having the best quality of the bunch) will help tremendously with the standardization of the Internet, and if Apple wants to use a different format for their higher-quality videos, that's fine too. -- Remco
