There is a particluar large industry that comes to mind where directors would want their viewers to have optional point of views, a rather 'taboo' industry at that (not one I am involved with). That said, also the field of education would benefit greatly from optional POV's within scenes. Personally I see the future of data as interactive avatars and being able to roam from one point in video to another view would allow more data/information on the scene to be accessible. When it comes to DRM I am neither for nor against, I do believe providing an option/flag for both would satisfy both sides of the fence. This alleviates the need to create new assets solely for VR, making it more cost/ time effective and extending their market reach. My current guess is that VR will not be used for professionally-generated content very much. What film director wants his viewers choosing their own point of view or camera angles? It’s perhaps more likely that VR will be used for personal content, whereupon it’s not so much a concern. It's already being done -- mostly in documentaries. See Nonny de la Peña's work at http://www.immersivejournalism.com/; specifically "Project Syria" and "Across the LineVR" where she uses immersive media to tell her stories. 360 video imposes new requirements on directors to make the user want to look where she wants you to look. This type of media may never be used for the latest superhero/action flick but it does force the viewer to really experience the environment. Directors and other story tellers are really experimenting with how best to do it. I hear that many really like the challenge and the flexibility the new media gives them to tell their story.
