I think the cleanest solution is to go back to the UUID **approach**. Namely, we associate both Element and CropTarget with a unique identifier (e.g. UUID, but not necessarily). We then say that cropTo(cropTarget) produces an effect that's dependent on the Element that's associated with that identifier.
