Summary of discussion on 2025-02-26 WG call: - Some agreement with the need: not uncommon to need some label for "unnamed" credentials but where raw credential ID is too long to comfortably fit in UI. A standardized canonical "short credential ID" consistent between tools would be nice to have. - Also some skepticism: password managers etc. currently do not display credential ID at all, why would a shorter one be better? - Why not just fixed-length prefix/suffix of credential ID? - Some kind of hash is prudent in case some authenticators emit structured credential IDs with similar prefix/suffixes - Possible internationalization concerns - user-friendly representation may need to be localizable -- GitHub Notification of comment by emlun Please view or discuss this issue at https://github.com/w3c/webauthn/issues/2256#issuecomment-2686040583 using your GitHub account -- Sent via github-notify-ml as configured in https://github.com/w3c/github-notify-ml-config
