in an ideal world any Fido key would work with any iOS app via HID and a simple lightning to USB-A adaptor like the cámara connector kit. Currently that isn't the case on iOS 13 and older. The lightning hint helps RP know if a previously registers credential is from A Apple certified MFi lightning device that can work with Brave , Dashlane and others on iOS.
I am encouraged that from the Safari point of view lightning is just like USB and will be using the HID endpoint. The Yubikey 5Ci will work just fine that way. We should discuss this at the W3C meeting in Japan coming up shortly.
