For information.

Please note, technical discussion of DOM should either take place in the relevant issue tracker, or the www-dom mailing list...

cheers

Hi all,

As you probably know, the Web Platform WG is chartered to update the DOM specification [0].

We are grateful to Yongsheng Zhu from Alibaba who has agreed to edit the specification. Following discussions between the W3C staff, the editor and chairs, we're proposing to move forward as follows:

The editor has been revising issues, both already filed in github or bugzilla, and elsewhere, and has developed a basic plan to update the specification between now and July, to produce a Candidate Recommendation for an updated version in July.

Most of the work has happened offline so far, so an important task is to move it to the github tracker. The highest priority is issues that are clearly undecided, so the Working Group and others can give input. There are other changes that seem like an obvious requirement, but we will file issues for tracking purposes.

We plan to make a Call for Consensus in early / mid January to produce a First Public Working Draft, so we can meet the W3C patent policy in our timeline. We will then aim to produce milestone drafts on a schedule similar to HTML, i.e. about every month or six weeks, to enable progressive review.

In particular, we're proposing to add relevant integration points for Service Workers, Custom Elements, and Shadow DOM, that need to be in the spec and have interoperable implementation, while maintaining individual specifications for those. In any case, any features can be considered for marking "at risk" during CR, to ensure the next Recommendation will not be full of unimplemented features.

We will use the normal working process for Web Platform [1] - editors can propose resolutions and assume agreement unless there are active objections. Where editors want active feedback from the Working Group we will tag the issues "Question for the WG" and notify this list.

The normal place for discussion of issues is in the github issue tracker [2]. If you want to take technical discussions of DOM to a mailing list, this www-dom@ is the right one.

If you have feedback on the administrative proposal, feel free to mail the chairs directly, use the main Webplat list public-webapps@ or file an issue on the DOM spec <https://github.com/w3c/dom/issues> or Working Group <https://github.com/w3c/WebPlatformWG/issues> trackers as appropriate.
