matatk left a comment (w3ctag/design-reviews#1111) As discussed, we are happy to see this use case addressed, and with the direction you're taking with your approach - though please come back with details once the issues around the trigger events are clarified. The web has a general problem of expressing associations between elements, with multiple solutions: HTML has IDREFs, which are relatively inflexible and fragile; CSS has the approach of creating names that are linked to selectors. It would be great if we could address this need in the same way, across the platform.
