Hi there! Just want to add my opinion on the subject. 
I'd be all for having an option to enable some sort of OS level icon clipping.

I'd push for having it be a default opt-in for a round icon. Coming from some native ios development, it's a nice feature to not have to worry about, and I'd assume most devs would want the round clipping. For those who do not want clipping, they could just set that.
