Two minor comments. (a) this is a general problem in programming languages, I think. (b) logically, we could also think of a syntax within the string itself. There, two possibilities come to mind. i) 'visible' syntax, such as HTML-like. "<span lang=\"en-us\">text in multiple languages</span>" ii) invisible syntax, i.e. escape sequences at the character level (anyone remember VT100 escape codes)?
