Re: [w3ctag/design-reviews] Serialization of natural language in data formats such as JSON [I18N] (#178)

Regarding (ii), invisible escape sequences within the string itself are pretty similar to using Unicode codepoints that do these things. They have the advantage that they can be copied around between more formats, but the disadvantage that they're invisible metadata and thus tend to get out of sync with the data (e.g., when copied unintentionally), and also being quite hard to edit without something like a hex editor.

I think if we wanted something within the string itself, I'd be in favor of it being visible rather than invisible.

But https://github.com/w3ctag/design-reviews/issues/178#issuecomment-313783678 argues against that sort of solution, as does the issue of such data being harder to consume.
