As I understand it, you would insert an element into the DOM, right? That's kind of what this is trying to avoid as it will mess with various other things -- collaborative editing being one. An obvious alternative for Safari is that you can just show a small window into which people can type their IME. As I understand it, that's what many native Windows apps do anyway.
