I don't buy the argument that the difference in selection behavior is what forced editors to override the default behavior. Gmail, for example, doesn't override selection/caret behavior as far as I can tell. What they override is undo/redo and other editing actions such as bolding of text. Anyway, we need to come up with a list of concrete use cases (e.g. building a collaborative editor) and associated requirements in order to talk about this.
