I feel like "one basic syntax covering all use cases" should be a requirement.

We are already in a position where the problem is over-constrained. trying to
work around that by having multiple, partial, solutions, seems likely to
produce something that had very poor developer ergonomics (the classic "design
by committee" mistake).

I think the correct next step is to work out which of the requirements is least
harmful to bend a little so that we can find the optimal solution even if it
doesn't strictly fulfill all the conditions.
