RE: webtv-ACTION-261: draft a proposal for the IG to confirm a desire for HTML and CSS to support TTML playback

All,

my proposed resolutions following Monday's meeting (designed to follow on from each other, i.e. we could accept all of them as resolutions):

1. The Media and Entertainment Interest Group recognises that playback of TTML subtitles and captions needs to be supported by the web platform as a whole.

2. The playback of TTML subtitles and captions on the web platform requires a CSS mapping for all the presentation features for which support is needed in the IMSC profiles of TTML, i.e. that for any given style attribute value permitted in IMSC there is an equivalent set of CSS property values that can be applied to equivalent HTML elements to achieve the same semantics.

3. The playback of TTML subtitles and captions on the web platform is best supported by allowing Text Track Cues to be created that support the generic presentation semantics of HTML and CSS.

4. The playback of TTML subtitles and captions on the web platform should include the ability to create appropriate Text Track Cues from data provided via Media Source Extensions.

Reading that back, it looks a bit like a manifesto. Anyway, comments or editing suggestions welcome, or indeed indications of support for making these proposals into resolutions.

kind regards,

Nigel
