Hi Fuqiao, Thanks for asking about this. Just a point of clarification for any TTWG members who, like me, were at first confused by this. The audio element that is being referenced here is the HTML audio element, not the TTML2 audio element. As you can see from the examples, the HTML audio element creates a player area with controls. The TTML2 audio element simply represents an audio resource. I don't wish to discourage any TTWG members from responding to this, but as Chair I think this question is out of scope of the TTWG's remit. None of the group's work to date has related to the appearance of media players and their layout and control. Of course if you have expertise to answer the question, please go ahead! Kind regards, Nigel On 13/12/2019, 15:01, "Fuqiao Xue" <xfq@w3.org> wrote: Hi all, I have been actioned [1][2] with contacting TTWG on behalf of the W3C I18N WG asking if anyone has experience dealing with media elements in vertical writing mode. The issue comes from a Chinese Layout Task Force meeting [3]. Currently, the audio element takes up a lot of horizontal space when the content of a web page flows vertically, as you can see in these two demos (block and inline): * https://xfq.github.io/testing/i18n-personal-tests/audio-vertical-block.html * https://xfq.github.io/testing/i18n-personal-tests/audio-vertical-inline.html And this behavior don't look right obviously. The issue itself is unrelated to media captioning, but we think that some of you may be experts who can comment on this because of your work on media. Any comment on what should audio elements look like in vertical writing mode? Should they be rotate 90 degrees? How should the volume/seeking/pause/resume controls be presented?
