Re: TTML support
The only browser that supports TTML is IE, which is why TTML files
won't play in any other browser.

Re: VTT support
Firefox and IE don't support the styling parts of VTT yet. It would be
good to follow up with them through bug reports.

Also, you say that you have worse results with VTT. Could you be more
specific? Maybe even register a bug on
https://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/enter_bug.cgi?product=TextTracks%20CG
for WebVTT to explain what you think is worse and what you didn't
understand in the specification?
