Hi all, I've put together a wiki page that I hope will eventually capture all our different understandings of caption and subtitle rendering approaches. I've called the document the "caption model - an abstract model of captions": http://www.w3.org/community/texttracks/wiki/Caption_Model In it I've tried to capture the rendering approaches as I've understood them from US caption specifications and generalised to other languages, in particular to vertical rendering. I may have missed some features of international caption models, so please have a thorough read and see if you're missing anything. Also, I may not have got everything right - in particular I wonder if vertically rendered captions actually ever bottom align - does anyone know? Note that one particular purpose of this document is to identify the requirements for captions and subtitles in WebVTT, so we can see which features have to be added to WebVTT or generalized. Please send any criticism to this list for discussion. Cheers, Silvia.
