Semantic Computing Devices

Based on recent developments in the consumer markets in terms of sales of computing devices tablets are now outselling netbook, notebook and desktop computers combined.

Unfortunately tablets and smart phones are not suitable for a wide array of software development and ICT specialized services.

And because of the pricing of smart phones and tablets, these devices threaten to widen the gap between the digital have and have-nots in our world today and make the access to the internet even less attainable for the majority of countries in the developing world.

Because of the increasing role of cloud computing, the internet of things and mobile platforms and computing IMHO I think it is necessary to define some class of semantic computing devices for use with cloud services, mobile platforms and the industrial internet (internet of things).

Already in Latin America and the Caribbean netbook and notebook computers are becoming scarce and the models now available have climbed back in pricing to levels comparable to those of 2002-2003.

This is NOT a favorable development.

Any ICT specialist, software developer or scientist will concur that tablets and smart phones are useful but not up to grade for specialized tasks.

Anyone out there willing to help flesh out and define the next wave of computing devices that we will need based on what we do as specialists and also consumers in general need instead of what tablet manufacturers want us to buy?

By naming these new wave semantic computing devices we will be emphasizing the need for them to incorporate plugin capabilities for big data, linked data and semantic technologies.

Since Apple has lost its innovative drive, maybe it is time to propose some new ideas from the end-users perspective.
