[ALL][PORT] Ecoterm Group

Hi all,

Last month I attended the second meeting of the Ecoterm group (see [1] for
presentations). The Ecoterm mission is: linking terminologies to facilitate
environmental information sharing. The group includes representatives of: UNEP,
USEPA, USGS, UN FAO, EEA ... organisations that have a major stake in managing
environmental information.

The Ecoterm group is keen to exploit the potential added value of RDF-based
solutions, and has produced much of the initial deployment feedback for the SKOS
Core work (GEMET and FAO's Agrovoc both have SKOS/RDF publications). I was
invited to the first Ecoterm meeting last year, and presented SKOS Core as an
outcome of SWAD-Europe. This year I was asked to give an overview of relevant
standardisation initiatives, and also an update on progress with SKOS Core and
other SWBP work (see [2]).

The Ecoterm group has clear distributed information management use cases, and is
keen to have the support of the SWBPD-WG in developing best practices and
enabling technology within their community. Key contacts are Gail Hodge (USGS)
and Gerard Cunningham (UNEP). There is also a public mailing list
<ecoterm@npogroups.org>.

The Ecoterm group is part of the wider ECOinformatics Initiative
<http://ecoinfo.eionet.eu.int/>. Quoted from the website: The cooperation on
ECOinformatics has been established to exchange information and carry out common
projects in the area of environmental information.

Yours,

Alistair.
