This a summary of the recent discussion on public-esw-thes@w3.org and development activity relating to the SKOS Core RDF Vocabulary. Tools ------- Dan Brickley has written a PHP script that exports categories from Wordpress (a PHP weblogging system) ... see the link below for more info. <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-esw/2004Aug/0001.html> I wrote a SKOS Validator in Java, that checks SKOS RDF data for various violations of the SKOS data model, including circularity of the broader/narrower hierarchy and multiple values of skos:prefLabel per language. See the link below for download info (N.B. this is at alpha release stage). <http://esw.w3.org/topic/SkosValidator> SKOS Core Actions ---------------------------- Handling top concepts: After some extensive discussion, a proposal reached consensus for introducing a new property for handling top concepts, and deprecating the old skos:TopConcept class. See the action announcement linked below, and also the public-esw-thes@w3.org archive [1] for prior discussions. <http://esw.w3.org/mt/esw/archives/000082.html> SKOS Core Proposals ------------------------------ Local (non-URI) identifiers: Most schemes have their own non-URI identifier scheme, but we realised that some system needs to be introduced to disambiguate local identifiers where concepts are members of more than one scheme. A proposal is in discussion, see link below for latest: <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-esw-thes/2004Aug/0031.html> 'Arrays' of concepts: There is a requirement to support labelled 'arrays' of concepts, which is a commonly used construct in the thesaurus community. A discussion of options for generating a proposal is written up at the link below. <http://esw.w3.org/topic/SkosDev/SkosCore/CollectionsAndArrays> Discussion --------------- Scheme versioning and change management: I thought it is very important to be able to offer clear recommendations on how to handle versioning of concept schemes on the semantic web. This is inevitably a difficult issue, so I started discussion with a writeup of possible support options at the link below. See also followup on public-esw-thes [1] on the same thread. <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-esw-thes/2004Aug/0035.html> Concept schemes and the models that describe them: Another issue is where to put the RDF descriptions of concept schemes, and how to relate these resources to the abstract resources they describe. I tried to kick off a discussion, see link below, as yet no response ... <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-esw-thes/2004Aug/0034.html> That's it for now. Yours, Alistair.
