Cameron, Can I suggest that avoiding the term 'unitless' may be a good idea, and something like 'unspecified', 'default' or 'inherited' unit may be better. Lots of other XML namespaces or data formatting activities use Units of Measure, and also dimensional analysis, and some of these routinely distinguish between truly unitless/dimensionless, and a UoM or dimension with unspecified or default unit/dimension. Rather counter-intuitively, a truly unitless/dimensionless quantity has a unit/dimension of '1', not null or 0. All the quantities considered are truly lengths. Just my 2¢s.
