255 is just so outdated, especially with high-resolution color available in lots of graphics pipelines.

Agreed. 0...255 in integers assumes a specific color space on the rendering device . 0.0-1.0 is a much larger range that can then be mapped into the range of the rendering device more accurately.
That said, for a lot of things folks do with computer graphics, 24 bit color is more than enough and there is a lot of familiarity in working with that way of specifying colors. I’d be in favor of maintaining at least some convenience functions to allow specification in that form, but maybe its just a matter of everyone getting used to a new way.
