The SVG Working Group just discussed `Discard "discard" elements`, and agreed to the following: * `RESOLUTION: Keep discard in the SVG Animation draft proposal. Ask Blink for more specific input about implementation complexity` <details><summary>The full IRC log of that discussion</summary> <krit> topic: Discard "discard" elements<br> <krit> GitHub: https://github.com/w3c/svgwg/issues/717<br> <krit> krit: original proposal was coming from Cyrus<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: Discard was added in SVG 2. It is no longer but still in the Animation spec and referenced form SVG2<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: Reason was to manage complicated animations with scipting<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: There is an implementation in Blink that no-one knew.<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: pdr posted that the use-counter is close to zero<br> <krit> Tav_: I do not like the use counter argument.<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: yeah. And in this case there just was one implementation. There is no legacy reason to keep it and no interest to implement otherwise.<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: we could leave it in the spec as a nice-to-have but do not discourage Blink to remove<br> <krit> krit: I think we should not encourage to remove a feature but still keep it in the spec. Either come to an agreement that there is not enough interest and remove or ask Blink to keep it.<br> <AmeliaBR> s/There is/So it only shows that there is/<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: I don't think there is a conflict here<br> <AmeliaBR> s/ and no interest to implement otherwise//<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: This is a draft spec. There are a lot of draft specs out there where the spec is not ready for implementation but don't remove it from the spec yet.<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: the spec is still in a draft state.<br> <krit> krit: Is there a FPWD yet?<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: We resolved but it didn't happen yet<br> <krit> krit: In this case I don't see a reason to remove it but we should still review its usefulness based on the comments.<br> <krit> AmeliaBR: The need comes down to what the future of the animation elements is at all. Will it stay legacy? Will we add improvements?<br> <nzimmermann> s/manage complicated animations with scipting/manage complicated animations without scripting/<br> <krit> krit: Do members feel it is relevant still and should stay in general?<br> <krit> nzimmermann: From the WebKit implementation I doubt it is complex to implement. Managing the state by web dev is more complex.<br> <krit> nzimmermann: Don't understand the argument of complexity from Blink. We need more input why it is difficult for them.<br> <krit> nzimmermann: Did not hear about the element before this call so I might miss something as well.<br> <krit> RESOLUTION: Keep discard in the SVG Animation draft proposal. Ask Blink for more specific input about implementation complexity<br> </details> -- GitHub Notification of comment by css-meeting-bot Please view or discuss this issue at https://github.com/w3c/svgwg/issues/717#issuecomment-556345944 using your GitHub account
