Ah, I was forgetting that `drawImage()` with more parameters allows you to clip an image. That does make it more confusing. I can't easily imagine how the SVG _should_ be scaled if you specify a second set of numbers that don't match the dimensions of the first. IMO, the most useful thing would be to treat them like an SVG View URL, overriding the viewBox.
