I would be extremely against making SVG more gratuitously different from HTML elements in the way CSS effects them. > transform for example doesn't create a stacking context in SVG. The transform *attribute*, and that's only possible because it works in such a way that it's indistiguishable whether the transform is applied on the group or the shapes (rotate and scale are both stuck with using the left/top origin).
