Tab explained to me in a reply to an email that opacity etc are 100% side-effect free when they're applied to elements that don't have children. (even if there is z-index etc) Structuring an SVG accordingly is a non-hackish solution for achieving side-effect free opacity, thus the whole issue is resolved enough for me.
