Or, if you have to perpetuate the (sorry for the word) mess from CSS (because of compatibility) , you could offer an additional property, eg "opacity-without-side-effects" (it would affect nothing but opacity, no matter z-index, tspans, groups, 3D transforms, blend modes, etc).
