Agreed. Here was one brief discussion I had with an OpenOffice person at Sun two years ago: http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/what_about_svg#comment13 This person seemed reluctant to the idea of taking the svg:rect element and extending that - they preferred that ODF had its own draw:rect element.
