Right.

BigBlueButton uses Red5 for its media streaming.

I am unaware if Red5 offers SFU as part of its suite of tools, and then 
if that (not an MCU) is used in integrations with BigBlueButton.

I do know that Red5 is Java-based, which fit badly with the kinds of 
server designs I am mostly interested in (e.g. FreedomBox).  Sorry that 
I therefore forgot to mention it in my previous lineup of tools.

For our meetings we need not care about servers needing big iron, as 
long as someone is happy to serve that for us.  For developing a Solid 
chat app around, each developer gets to pick their favorite, I guess :-)

Do you mention Mattermost and BigBlueButton because you have good 
experiences with those scaling to 30+ participants (each most likely 
connected from a non-LAN connection)?
