BytesMessage vs. TextMessage

Can someone explain the rationale for limiting SOAP/JMS to BytesMessages? 
We currently successfully use TextMessages when sending SOAP/WebSphere MQ. 
 It seems to me that this should be a choice left up to the stakeholders 
of the interface.
