BACKGROUND:
At the invitation of the HL7 ITS work group
http://www.hl7.org/Special/committees/xml/overview.cfm
we have scheduled a teleconference (above) to discuss the start of work
at HL7 on "RDF for Semantic Interoperability". The HL7 AID work group
http://www.hl7.org/Special/committees/java/overview.cfm
is invited to join this call, as are members of the W3C Healthcare and
Life Sciences group and anyone else who is interested in this work.

When the idea of doing this work at HL7 was first proposed several
months ago by Stan Huff, the thought was to create a new HL7 work group
for it, and a charter was drafted and circulated. However, in
discussions that Claude Nanjo and I had with others at the Chicago HL7
meetings a couple of weeks ago, there was a suggestion that it may be
more effective to start this work as a sub-group of an existing HL7 work
group -- in particular the ITS work group -- rather than starting a new
work group right away. (Peter Hendler also later suggested that this
work could also fit under the HL7 AID work group.) The motivation for
putting this under an existing HL7 work group is that this would allow
easier assimilation into HL7 processes, facilitate better initial
coordination and networking within HL7, and reduce the risk of this work
being misconstrued as competing with other existing HL7 efforts. Claude
and I both found that reasoning fairly compelling, so we arranged with
HL7 ITS co-chair Paul Knapp to schedule a time during one of the
regularly scheduled ITS calls, for a joint discussion with members of
the AID work group and the W3C community.

The purpose of this discussion:

  - briefly review the intent of the "RDF for Semantic Interoperability"
work;

  - seek consensus on the forum for starting this work; and

  - set agenda for next teleconference.

Please join if you can. If anyone is interested in this work, but
cannot join this call, please let me know so that I can still keep you
informed.

Thanks!
David Booth
