Presentation by Cecil Lynch on Semantic Web technologies in Healthcare:

Cecil will present the CDC TB surveillance system as an end to end use of SW and rules based system for

National Disease Surveillance, the use of ontology both as a "smart app" and also as rapid engineering

artifacts that give longevity to system design by abstracting the knowledge layer from the application.
He will also discuss his opinion as to the biggest challenge the SW community will face in the next few

years is organization of the linkages between the genome and the phenotypical disease expression.

The Disease ontology is trying to tackle part of this but there is so much poorly linked data on

disease states, biomarkers, gene snips, proteins and gene expression that it is going to be hard to

deliver on the promise of personalized medicine.
