I'm Jim McGurk and I work in the Clinical Genomics Data Systems group at Merck Research Laboratories. I am involved in the efforts to design and build data systems used by clinical, preclinical and basic researchers here at Merck. My current efforts are directed at ensuring that biomarker data - genetics, genomics, images, proteomics, etc. - are accessible to the researchers at Merck and our outside collaborators. I'm interested in the technologies that ensure better, faster and less ambiguous communication of scientific and medical information. I am very excited by the potential of the Semantic Web and related technologies to facilitate communication for everyone working in the life sciences and medical fields. I can not imagine being involved in a more exciting endeavor - this can be an engine that drives astounding advances in science, medicine and drug discovery. For background: I have a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Rockefeller University and shifted into IT about 10 years ago after post docs in academic and industrial settings.
