Hi all, When the group discussed publication of the Presentation API as a new Candidate Recommendation this week, I claimed that the group had not yet switched to Process 2020 [1]. Sorry, that was wrong! The group did switch to the new process, it just hasn't switched to the new Patent Policy yet. Under the new process, the group can choose between two forms of Candidate Recommendation: 1. A Candidate Recommendation Draft (CRD). All it takes to publish the Presentation API as CRD is a group resolution. The group can then publish as many CRD as it needs. However, it needs to publish a final Candidate Recommendation Snapshot before it can move forward to Proposed Recommendation. Publication as a CRD does not trigger a call for patent exclusion. 2. A Candidate Recommendation Snapshot (CR). This requires both a group resolution and getting the Director's approval. The group can then directly move forward to Proposed Recommendation. Publication as CR triggers a call for patent exclusions. Choice between 1. and 2. depends on whether the group feels that it is done with the spec. Given that the Open Screen Protocol is still being adjusted, it may make sense to publish a CRD for the time being. That gives the group more flexibility to make further changes and reflect them in the published version of the spec. FYI, the new Patent Policy would provide RF guarantees on the CR. The "old" one (still the one used by the group) only provide guarantees at the Recommendation stage. Switch to the new Patent Policy requires rechartering of the group, which will be done in bulk after an Advisory Committee Review for all impacted groups. Francois.
