Re: CSIRO Australia has nominated Nicholas Car to Spatial Data on the Web Interest Group

Hi Linda,

Thanks for welcoming me in. I’m not exactly new to the IG so I guess I know my way around!

We, CSIRO, are doing really major spatial Linked Data work at the moment which is national scale, authoratitive and multi aspect and heading for continued operations so it’s an exciting time for us to be in the IG.

You asked about my interests, well I think we really need more established spatial semantic practice such as standard ways of indicating proportional overlap of features, not just geo:sfOverlap. We need better handing of CRSes using Semantic Web techniques, better integration of observed spatial properties (area) with geometries etc. many of these things could, as suggested on the mailing list, be included in a GeoSPARQL v2.

Overall, I really like the OGC/W3C fusion that the SDW WG did so I’d like to be involved in follow-ons from that. I almost joined the SDW WG at setup time actually (while at CSIRO then at Geoscience Australia) but new babies prevented necessary after hours commitments from me then!

I’m currently in the W3C’s Dataset Exchange WG of course and keen to see, with Rob A, Jo Abhayaratna etc., if the profiling mechanics there can be useful in semantic spatial land.

Cheers,

Nick
