Yes, I’ve been nagging the QUDT people for years about getting the vocabularies available as linked data. 

It has been really frustrating. 

TQ and NASA appear to have been obsessed with QC, which kinda misses one of the key ideas from TimBL’ s Linked Open Data manifesto: “raw data now”. 

 

These (units) are fundamental concepts and it would be really helpful to the community for us to be able to fall in behind a single set of URIs. 

The representations can be progressively improved over time. 

 

I’m slightly hopeful that the UNF project will put a bit more effort and energy into this. 

As I am on the project Advisory Board I will use your mail in support.

I download one file called  schema QUDT V2

but the QUDT v2 does not seems to be cleaned.

I have some classes name errorX...

And the URI are not published as LOD 

If I put the URL http://qudt.org/2.0/schema/qudt in web  browser  I have an error 404

so I will not be able to use this version of unit ontology.

The good news

I like the skos vocabulary that define weather property http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/P07/current/

we will use it and link it directly to our data without created a new ontology. Let see if it generate error due to sosa constraints.

This type of vocabulary provide the reference ID (URI) that is usefull to query and retrieve dataset .

The trouble is that it defined only property and no feature of interest.

So we have two possibilities :

1) this type of property is sufficient to identify the feature of interest for a human. So we  supress all mention of feature of interest (like wind or precipitation)

2) find another wovabulary that provide generic URI to identify feature of interest like the SWEET ontology. But maybe for a expert SWEET is not precise enought there is a real gap between the vocabulary of vocab.nerc.ac.uk <http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk>  and SWEET.

 

For the moment we will choose the simplest way: solution 1. It means that our description will be really plain and simple compare to our previous dataset based on SSN and Laurent Lefort works.

we have still some problem about unit.

Progress has been intermittent since then, but we know that CF is updated regularly. 

 

As far as UOM are concerned, this NIST project is moving to (finally!) get QUDT v2 published as linked data: https://units.unf.edu/

I would like just to point out the huge work of Laurent Lefort during the creation of SSN

he has created a network of ontology for weather station:

1)climate and forecast ontology

2) unit ontology

3) weather sensor ontology (aws): an ontology that describe the sensor based on climate and forecast ontology and also the unit ontology. a sensor is described by the property it observes and the type of measure it can provide.

as far as I understand we have to recreate also this ontology to be compliant with the new climate and forecast ontology.

Which dataset that store different unit  are uptodate?

could we reuse the unit ontology of ssn?

I forwarded this to colleagues who work on the CF conventions. They pointed out that the CF vocabulary is updated regularly – the version you have used is quite old. 

 

This SKOS representation is always current http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/P07/current/ but you’d need to re-apply Jonathan Gregory’s rules to get to the same place. 

The NVS has a SPARQL endpoint here: http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/sparql/

Note that P01 has nearly 38k concepts – combinatorial effect.

The SEAS Climate and Forecast (CF) features Ontology https://w3id.org/seas/ClimateAndForecastOntology has been generated automatically from the climate and forecast ontology http://purl.oclc.org/NET/ssnx/cf/cf-feature by applying the following two SPARQL-Generate rules:

 

Until it's online, you can fetch this new module at https://github.com/thesmartenergy/seas/raw/master/src/main/ontop/1.0/ClimateAndForecastOntology-1.0.ttl 

 

Be aware that this ontology makes the Specific Instances of ssn:Property assumption: no more than one feature of interest per property.

I have received the demand from Armin Haller about our usage of SSN.

About the old version of ssn our datasets is available at

the sparqlendpoint is http://ontology.irstea.fr/weather/snorql/

We can not do a translation of this datasets from the 8 of august. The
ingenier in charge of the dataset is on vacation for the whole august month.

And I do not know yet if he will be available in september to do this
translation.

Note that our dataset is based on climate and forcast ontology
https://www.w3.org/2005/Incubator/ssn/ssnx/cf/cf-feature#Precipitation

If this ontology is not available in the new version of ssn we can not
do nothing.
