RE: Metadata on sensor, actuator or sampler

Yes. I started a response to this too, along the same lines.
Most of the classes in SOSA/SSN are relatively ‘abstract’ in the sense that one could imagine many many additional properties that might be relevant.
But we chose not to specify them here, but leave them to extensions that could be done for specific applications or communities.
Now it might look like the properties you mention should be standardized, but actual descriptions of sensors, actuators, samplers etc was beyond the scope of our work here. Rather, the focus is on uncovering what classes are needed and how they are related to each other.
You will find that pretty much all the properties in the ontology of that nature.

For descriptions of things, the Web of Things work is relevant, and maybe Good Relations can help:
http://purl.org/goodrelations/v1#serialNumber

http://purl.org/goodrelations/v1#hasManufacturer

http://purl.org/goodrelations/v1#hasMakeAndModel

http://purl.org/goodrelations/v1#typeOfGood

I would suggest that we might include examples or guidance about use of Good Relations before we went inventing something local.

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for your interest in the working group and your feedback!

There is a horizontal module that allows the modelling of some system capabilities http://w3c.github.io/sdw/ssn/#System-capabilities of Sensors and Actuators. However, some of the metadata attributes that you mention are the concern of the Thing description that the Web of Things working group is currently working on: https://w3c.github.io/wot-thing-description/ We are trying to make sure that the metadata on that lower level is aligned with the more abstract metadata descriptions in SSN/SOSA.

Hope that answers your question.

Kind regards,
Armin

Hi SDW – SSN,

I have been following the SSN developments for the last couple of months and I have not found much on metadata of the actual sensor. Contrary to O&M and ISO19115 which is metadata on the observations or measurements, I mean the metadata on a physical sensor, actuator or sampler. For example as is done in SensorML, see: http://www.sensorml.com/sensorML-2.0/examples/metadata.html. This could be metadata such as: name of the sensor, type, manufacturer, electrical requirements, start time, or measurement properties. Has any work been done on aligning SOSA to SWE / SensorML, or are there other options to link to metadata of a sensor, actuator or sampler?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
