It is the explicit recommendation from TC39 to use numertic timestamps rather than Date objects. Feel free to jump in to that thread if you disagree though. But as of now I think the arguments are stronger than your arguments in comment 3. I don't think the existence of valueAsDate() is enough to keep Date in WebIDL.
