Scholarly Publishing @ the W3C

Hi all,

It's been quiet here for the last...year or more...but I'd like to hear from folks about what their interests currently are for scholarly publishing on the Web.

Is ScholarlyHTML still a format folks want to develop? We (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.) have a format based on this work, and would be interested in seeing it continue.

Are there other formats folks are continuing to build upon and toward the Web?

Who's still here, awake, and interested in improving scholarly research on the Web--especially now in the midst of a pandemic when easy access to well constructed research seems especially important?

Related to the above, the larger publishing space at the W3C is heating back up. The Web Publishing WG is concluding it's work soon and publishing a Publication Manifest data model and an Audiobook format based on that model. During that time, the EPUB CG got EPUB 3.2 out the door, and now the W3C is working to charter an EPUB Working Group to bring that work to Recommendation status. And, to support all these efforts, the Publishing Community Group is positioned as a great place for future incubation efforts related to publishing.

You can read more about those goings on in this blog post:
https://www.w3.org/blog/2020/03/listen-to-the-people-the-future-of-epub-and-new-directions-for-publishing-w3c/

However, scholarly publishing's been pretty absent from this story line, and I'd like to fix that. :)

So, please share what you're working on now, where your interests lie, and what you think about where scholarly publishing might best be served within the W3C. Some options include:
 - do we rename this group (i.e "Scholarly Publishing CG") to encompass more than the ScholarlyHTML format?
 - do we join the Publishing CG (and close this group)?
 - other? ;)

Thanks for still being here, and I look forward to hearing from everyone!

Cheers,
Benjamin
