BookFormatTypes

In the extension proposal there are three new BookFormatTypes:

AudioBook
LargePrintBook
PrintBook

The existing BookFormatTypes in base Schema.org are:

Ebook
Hardcover
Paperback

Generally this feels unsatisfactory - labelling different types of thing as a ‘FormatType’. I’d like to propose the Bib Extension can do a better job here.

For me:

Ebook
AudioBook

Are both clear candidates for new Types. AudioBook has already been discussed from this perspective and there were previous proposals of handling this in Schema.org documented on the Wiki:

It would be good if the proposal could build on this existing work done for AudioBook. Would anyone like to second this approach?

I suspect Ebooks have enough properties to deserve their own type as well - but we haven’t done the work for this yet, so I won’t propose adding this to the extension proposal at this time.

I think this would logically point to “PrintBook” being a type but I’m not completely sure about this.

I’m not sure about LargePrintBook - I don’t know enough about this type of material to comment in detail. I don’t really like the idea of mixing ‘LargePrint’ in with ‘Hardcover’ and ‘Paperback’ and might want to check what the properties of a LargePrintBook are (presumably the key thing is ‘text size’? - is this a property that could be added to Book?)

So my main proposal is:

* AudioBook should be a new type in the extension based on one of the previous proposals on the wiki

Secondary proposals:

* We should consider adding an Ebook type to the extension as and when the work can be done to come up with a proposal for this
* We should enumerate the properties of Large Print Books and see if they would fit better as properties rather than using a LargePrintBook type
* If we reach agreement to add new types for AudioBook and Ebook we should consider using a type for PrintBooks
