Kit proposal

I’m assuming that the proposal for Kit is intended for use for things that are described by MARC records which have a 007/00 value of ‘o’?

If so then the definition given on http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd007o.html is:

as a mixture of various components issued as a unit and intended primarily for instructional purposes. No one component is identifiable as the predominant component of the item. Examples are packages of assorted materials, such as a set of K-12 social studies curriculum material (books, workbooks, guides, activities, etc.), or packages of educational test materials (tests, answer sheets, scoring guides, score charts, interpretative manuals, etc.).

This implies for me that a ‘Kit’ is a type of learning resource made up of other resources. Which in turns suggests the use of:

Thing > Property > learningResourceType

and

Thing > Property > isPartOf

I also think the work done by LRMI http://www.lrmi.net/the-specification is relevant here and think it would be good to get comment from Phil Barker on any work in this area.

This work is now close to being ready for release. Dan has indicated that this provides an excellent opportunity for a bibliographic extension to be one of, if not the first, enabled and released in this way. In preparation for this, Dan Scott and I have put together a candidate set of types and properties that could constitute an initial bib extension release, which this email introduces.

To take advantage of the opportunity to release along with the capability release, however, we need to agree a starting subset fairly quickly. To that end Dan and I have drawn up this initial (1.0) proposal consisting of what we believe to be things that are fairly noncontroversial.

They are in three independent groups of proposals, for general bibliographic markup; some helpful things for the physical structure of archives & basic collections; and for comics.
