Abstract

This specification specifies an Hypothetical Render Model (HRM) that constrains the presentation complexity of documents that conform to any of the TTML Profiles for Internet Media Subtitles and Captions ([IMSC]).

The model is not intended as a specification of the processing requirements for implementations. For instance, while the model defines glyph cache for the purpose of modelling how the number of glyph drawing operations can be reduced, it neither requires the implementation of such a cache, nor models the sub-pixel glyph positioning and anti-aliased glyph rendering that can be used to produce text output.

Furthermore, the model is not intended to constrain readability complexity.

Status of the Document

This document was published by the Timed Text Working Group as a Candidate Recommendation Snapshot using the Recommendation track.

For this specification to exit the CR stage, one of the following minimum combinations of independent factors of verifications SHALL be demonstrated:

  * at least 1 content producing implementation and at least 1 validating implementation; or
  * at least 2 independent validating implementations.

The Working Group has identified the following at risk features:

Issue 63 : At risk: support for IMSC Image Profile

This feature is expected to be removed before advancement to Proposed Recommendation if sufficient implementation experience cannot be demonstrated.

At risk features may be be removed before advancement to Proposed Recommendation.

The history of substantive changes made to this document is summarized at E. Summary of substantive changes.

Publication as a Candidate Recommendation does not imply endorsement by W3C and its Members. A Candidate Recommendation Snapshot has received wide review, is intended to gather implementation experience, and has commitments from Working Group members to royalty-free licensing for implementations.

This Candidate Recommendation is not expected to advance to Proposed Recommendation any earlier than 20 July 2023.
