There was a discussion of SPARQL synatx on #swig:

My summary is that there were two main issues:

Issue 1 : $vars
Issue 2 : '''-strings

There were other points discussed.

My own note is that '-strings are useful when writing SPARQL queries inside Java 
programs. '''-strings and """-strings are less useful in programs anyway.
