Axel, Sebastian, Thank you for the further details and the clarified example. I agree that the expansion of LeftJoin just after the definition is not inline with the definition. The definition in SPARQL 1.0 is correct, although from feedback not as clear as desired, hence the rewrite for SPARQL 1.1. The expansion is in 3 parts in SPARQL 1.0, not two for clarity after a comment during SPARQL 1.0. I have recorded the issue and a proposed correction on the errata document. This is not a formal change (there is no working group active to approve it) and it will have to be reviewed and formally resolved by some future working group.
