Progress so far: the grammar preprocessing stylesheet convert-grammar.xsl correctly generates an <xnt> element with a reference to the XPath 3.0 production which appears to be identical to the <xnt> elements that resolve correctly from within the narrative text. But it seems that an element matching prod/xnt is rendered differently from one that matches xnt elements appearing elsewhere.
