RE: [southerncross] SSB installation

Bob,
Thanks for good description of your set-up.
I didn't realize the Icom 710 had a remote head. I thought it was just
the new IC-M802 model.
I really need the remote head as we have so little room on our SC28. I
like the idea of going to your thru-hulls and engine block rather than
the dyna plate, but didn't know if that amount of copper foil would be
sufficient. I have no experience with SSB and therefore don't have any
idea about the noise that can be associated with them.
I look forward to seeing you at the Feb. meeting.

Thanks again
Keith

Hi! About that SSB installation... We aboard SC31 Sea Bear are using an

Icom 710 with remote head. The remote head is installed in the nav
station. The radio itself is installed high on the hull in the quarter
berth area. The AT-130 antenna tuner is also mounted there, further
aft. The antenna cable leads thru the cockpit combing to the backstay.
We chose to replace our split backstay with twe separate backstays,

one of which has the Norseman antenna insulator installed about 3 feet
from the top.
Our ground pland -- we used the copper foil. A piece runs from the

radio down to the thru-hull of the port side cockpit drain Another
piece of foil runs from the antenna tuner to the same thru-hull. From
there, copper foil runs to the engine block, the engine raw water intake

thru-hull, and the starboard thru-hull. That's it. No dyna plate.
We think this is a good installation. For example we used Winlink
email with our Pactor modem successfully from locations such as Puerto
Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and all up and down the US
east coast. We successfully communicated with folks all through the
Caribbean and along the US coast with this system.
We'll see you at the February meeting!
