RE:[southerncross] searching! - SC 39 Overview

Bryan,

I owned a 39, about as long as it took to get to Bermuda from Marion, which as I recall was a little over three days, or just under 200 miles a day. Pretty respectable.

If you want to get an idea of relative performance, you can go to the New England PHRF web site (www.phrfne.org) and look a the list of base handicaps for virtually every fiberglass boat ever built. At 138, the SC39 is again fairly respectable...a Swan 40, a raceboat, is 120. You can compare ratings with other boats you are interested in. There's also a web site which has a hull speed calculator (just google "hull speed" and you'll find it)...all things being equal, the longer the water line the faster the boat.

Finally, to my knowlege, the Airex core has never been a problem. It's a semi-rigid closed cell PVC foam, and if properly installed, should last forever. It produces a hull that is enormously strong and resilient, without the downsides of balsa. (soaking up water, rotting, delamination etc.) When we built these boats, Airex was a huge plus. No Southern Cross boats were ever built with a balsa core that I know of.

The problem with Southern Cross 39's is that it's hard to find one.
