W3C Working Draft 23 July 2004 -  section 15.1.3.1 examples , fn:index-of 

	If @a is an attribute of type xs:string* whose typed value is "red
green blue", 
then: fn:index-of (@a, "blue") returns 3. This is because the function
calling mechanism 
atomizes the attribute node to produce a sequence of three strings. 

Could  an attribute  be of type xs:string* ? 
In my opinion in 
<x a="red green blue"/> 
the the attribute a would atomize to  a single string value, not three.
